Olivier´s family orginates from a small village in northern Italy called Dimaro, nestled in a valley in the Alps named “Val di Sole.” Today the village is know for skiing in the winter and trekking in the summer, but during Olivier’s childhood the economy was failing. In 1951, Olivier´s father decided to leave the country. He accepted an opportunity to move to Chile. In May of 1951, the family arrived in the La Serena/Coquimbo as one of 200 families invited to participate in a development plan created by the Chilean president, Gabriel Gonzalez Videla, and the Italian Prime Minister, Alcide Degasperi.
Aldo Olivier Granola
Aldo was the oldest of his 7 other brothers, and after arriving he gained two more! The Olivier’s started their life in the Southern hemisphere cultivating vegetables. A few years late, Aldo got married and he moved from La Serena to a small village in the Elqui Valley, El Tambo, located in the Vicuña commune. He and his wife had four children and in 1972 he began planting grape vines to produce Pisco (the Chilean national spirit). A few years later, he established his own Pisco distillery that quickly became the third largest producer in Chile.
The Falernia project was born in 1995 after he met his cousin Giorgio Flessati, an oenologist working in the Trentino region in northern Italy. Falernia began as an innovative venture, as it is the northernmost winery in Chile and considerably far from other wine valleys.
The driving force has been a passion for wine production and the challenge of transforming a tract of desert into a green vineyard. In utilizing the latest technology, support from agronomists in Chile, universities, and several world renowned oenologists, Falernia has transformed their vineyard into a producer of premium wines.
