The Chatelain family have been growing vines on the slopes around Pouilly-sur-Loire since 1630.
André Chatelain, who died in 2005, was amongst the first producers in Pouilly-sur-Loire to export his wines, so starting the process of building our international reputation.
Jean-Claude and Genevière Chatelain now run the family estate. We have now been joined by our son, Vincent, and by Vincent Vatan, our son-in-law. The two Vincents are the 12th generation of vignerons at Domaine Chatelain.
Today we have 30 hectares of vines in Pouilly-Fumé spread across six of the seven communes of the appellation:
Tracy-sur-Loire
Pouilly-sur-Loire
Mesves-sur-Loire
Saint-Andelain
Saint-Laurent l'Abbaye
Saint-Martin-sur-Nohain
This means that our grapes come from all the different types of soils found around Pouilly. This gives us a great deal of freedom when putting our blends together, so that our wines are balanced and very typical of the appellation. Also we spread the risk of being hit by bad weather, especially frost or hail.
