Pergolaia 2009 Tuscany

The close proximity of the Tuscan coast is keenly felt on this bright, soft and sapid red berry wine, whose saltiness could also be attributed to the minerals leached from the Maremma soils. Very much Caiarossa’s everyday drinking wine, this is a blend of predominantly Sangiovese, with a dollop of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon – you wouldn’t expect anything less given the cantina’s Bordeaux roots! Sensitively finished by the impressive Dominique Génot, régisseur at Caiarossa, it reminds me slightly of Rosso di Montalcino on account of its fine poise and pretty Sangiovese fruit.
